Scratching is a natural behavior for cats, yet it often leads to the destruction of household items, much to the dismay of pet owners. Livelyhood Ltd. challenges this perception with their innovative design, Catvas, a cat scratching board that turns feline instincts into a shared artistic endeavor. This unique product not only caters to the needs of cats but also serves as a medium for creating distinctive, abstract art.
What sets Catvas apart is its ability to evolve with each scratch. The double-layered fabric, designed to wear away over time, reveals a colorful underlayer, creating a painting-like effect. This process not only satisfies a cat's natural scratching urges but also results in a visually appealing piece that pet owners can cherish. The concept of Catvas is to redefine the relationship between humans and their feline companions, encouraging a new perspective on pet-related activities.
The design of Catvas is as practical as it is aesthetic. Constructed from recyclable materials such as wood, aluminum, and fabric made from old clothes and mycorrhiza, it emphasizes sustainability. The easy-to-assemble components minimize packaging waste and reduce transportation costs, reflecting a commitment to eco-friendly practices. The dimensions of 300 mm x 430 mm x 370 mm make it a suitable addition to any living space.
Functionality is at the heart of Catvas. Its L-shaped structure aligns with a cat's natural stretching habits, and the removable fabric panels can be easily replaced, ensuring longevity. As the cat scratches, the design beneath emerges, offering a unique visual treat that doubles as a decorative element. This interactive piece not only serves a practical purpose but also strengthens the emotional bond between cats and their owners.
The development of Catvas was a collaborative effort, with contributions from designers Mingye Wang, Xuyang Zhang, and Xiaofang Li. The project spanned a year, from January to December 2023, in Shanghai. Research into feline behavior and owner sentiment played a crucial role in shaping this design. By tapping into the human desire to collect and preserve memories associated with their pets, Catvas elevates the traditional scratching board to an item of sentimental value.
Recognized for its innovative approach, Catvas received the Iron A' Design Award in the Pet Care, Toys, Supplies, and Products for Animals Design Category in 2024. This accolade is a testament to the product's design excellence, practicality, and ingenuity. Catvas is not just a pet accessory; it's a statement piece that celebrates the co-creation of beauty between species, fostering a deeper appreciation for our animal companions.
